To formulate a set of rules
for the Thompson 7 One Design we had the advantage of being able to
avoid the flaws in older "one design" class regulations.
Our aims were to:
- Narrow the gap between athletic and
"not so athletic" teams by involving a "legs in"
and "hiking" clause to see crews sitting comfortably in
the cockpit with their feet under a support bar.
- Leave sail design open enough for
competition between lofts while tightly restricting size.
- Encourage individual input to deck
"systems" design, while locking in critical control
positions such as jib and main sheet tracks and spinnaker turning
blocks.
- "Set in concrete" the use of
components that effect the One Design nature of the Thompson
7. Hull, deck, internals, keel, rudder, mast and spreaders
assembled to lockup is the minimum purchase stage.
